Body Offering

first_imgThe Body in Indian Art, a rich concept of exhibiting the uniqueness of the annals of Indian museology matched with an equally captivating and unconventional design displayed in eight galleries of the National Museum(NM) ended up last week.  With its distinct approach to deck-up, lighting and even acoustics tailor-made for the unusual sequencing of objects, NM turned a new leaf in the history of Indian museology. ‘It has raised the bar of museology in India’, said NM Director-General Venu V. Normally, the concept of design gets subdued under the weight of a phenomenal exhibition, which The Body in Indian Art was. But it is equally true that such a huge event – with over 350 objects on display – needed a brilliant design to crystallize the concept, and the design wing did a tremendous job’, noted Venu. ‘Putting the storyline into use by apt and ideal use of space (in NM) was the task that followed,’ recalled Chatterjee, an alumnus of National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. He further added, ‘There were only two-and-a-half months left for me to meet the deadline. However, the initial sketches themselves gave high hopes of realising the task.’ Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’Ahuja said the unusual sequencing lent certain objects at the BIA interpretations that were completely distinct from Indomania. ‘When we (Ahuja and Chatterjee) moved things in the NM space, new configurations began emerging.’ The design at BIA also went for a massive reinvention vis-à-vis Indomania. For, here a chunk of the expected visitors was closer to the country’s heritage – culturally and geographically. Thus the gallery on ‘Supernatural’ was a longish hall of many-hued stone columns that evoke the famed colonnades of a South Indian temple,  forming a grand setting for the morphed, deformed and divine bodies in that gallery. Also Read – Leslie doing new comedy special with NetflixSimilarly, the gallery on ‘rapture’ was set against a painted landscape of grove-like clusters of curved textile surfaces with colours drawn from Ragamala paintings, forming intimately scaled enclosures for these sculptures and miniatures. ‘I believe the visitor experienced a different dissolution of architectural space in the textured, ash-grey gallery on asceticism, carpeted from floor to pedestal to ceiling,’ Chatterjee said. Again, after the gripping darkness of the galleries (painted in black) on death, one entered the second, which was about ‘shunyata’ (nothingness) and the body beyond form. All galleries had their particular harmonic arrangements in response to specific works, themes and spaces — using colour, light, line, material and volume to provide a tonal rhythm within which individual art pieces shone forth, interacting both with other masterpieces and with the visitor’s body. The synthesis of sight and sound was also a striking feature, with music and video installations dispersed throughout the galleries, providing places for rest and contemplation. Several galleries featured specially designed wall-mounted display tables, carefully angled to exhibit miniature paintings worked out with ergonomic attention to Indian body proportions.last_img read more

We are the last of our city’s large format music and video stores to yield to the challenges posed by new technologies and piracy,” it says on the shop’s website. Selfies reveal if you are going through romantic crisis

first_imgAccording to researchers from Florida State University, more selfies an individual posts on the social media site Instagram, the greater the likelihood he or she might experience conflict in romantic relationship.”The results show that body image satisfaction can be detrimental to Instagram users’ romantic relationships, especially when users’ body image satisfaction is promoted in the form of Instagram selfie posts,” explained lead author Jessica Ridgway and assistant professor Russell Clayton. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’The duo teamed up to examine the predictors and consequences associated with Instagram selfie posting. With an online survey of 420 Instagram users between the ages of 18 to 62, the researchers found that Instagram selfie posting is associated with and predicted by an individual’s overall body image satisfaction. In other words, those who think they look good are more likely to post selfies. However, Instagram selfie posting behaviours were found to be associated with increased Instagram-related relationship conflict. Also Read – Leslie doing new comedy special with NetflixThe researchers defined Instagram-related conflict as jealousy and arguments occurring due to either or both partners’ Instagram selfie posting behaviours. Not surprisingly, Instagram-related conflict was found to be associated with increased negative romantic relationship outcomes, which were defined as emotional or physical infidelity, breakup and divorce. “The results from this study provide an avenue for future body image research,” Ridgway said in a paper published in the journal Cyberpsychology, Behaviour, and Social Networking. The findings contributes to a growing body of scholarly literature that has examined the predictors and consequences associated with using social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter.  “For instance, future research could examine whether social media users post images of their actual selves or their virtual ideal selves, and whether such online behaviours are associated with similar negative outcomes found in our study,” the authors noted. In order to prevent negative relationship outcomes from arising, Instagram users must limit their selfie posting behaviours, especially when selfie posting becomes problematic in a user’s romantic relationship.last_img read more

Tweeting while watching TV pushes you to shop

first_imgWhile marketers have feared that social media distracts viewers from advertisements and minimises their impact, a new study found that tweeting during TV pushes people for online shopping. “Social shows” are more beneficial to advertisers because commercials that air in those programs generate more online shopping on the advertisers’ websites. “We find that advertisements that air in programmes with more social activity see increased ad responsiveness in terms of subsequent online shopping behaviour,” said Also Read – Add new books to your shelfBeth L Fossen, Assistant Professor of marketing at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business. This result varies with the mood of the ad, with more affective ads – in particular, funny and emotional ads – seeing the largest increases in online shopping activity. “Our results shed light on how advertisers can encourage online shopping activity on their websites in the age of multi-screen consumers,” Fossen maintained. The researchers also observed that ad timing played a major role in affecting online shopping. Advertisements airing near a half-hour interval increased online purchases. How to Take Advantage of Online Training Tools

first_img How Success Happens Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Listen Now Hear from Polar Explorers, ultra marathoners, authors, artists and a range of other unique personalities to better understand the traits that make excellence possible. As options for learning online continue to expand, a growing number of entrepreneurs are using them to keep their staff on the cutting edge. Using tools for online training, including videos, apps, and webinars, rather than sending employees to expensive training seminars or bringing in pricey consultants to train on site, can save startups and growing businesses both money and time.Companies with fewer than 500 employees represent one of the fastest-growing markets for, an online learning library with more than 1,450 video courses. “Small businesses are turning to online training for cost, quality, and access reasons,” says Nate Kimmons, vice president of enterprise marketing at “Gone are the days of sending employees off to a two-day, in-person class. Online training serves as a 24/7 resource that the learner can access anytime, anywhere at their own pace from any device. It’s simple to use.”If you are thinking of trying online training, here are five things to consider and examples of tools to get you started.  1. Get specific. One of the advantages of online education is the sheer volume of possibilities. There’s no need to attend a general seminar about Internet marketing if you really just need a specific course about how to create daily deals that people will buy.”Online, we can find training options for very specific and sometimes obscure topics,” says John Walsh, president of Total Mortgage Services in Milford, Conn. “We’ve found that if we can think of it, then someone has put together a video, slides, or a podcast covering it.”Related: Olympic Training Tips for Coaching Employees to GreatnessFor instance, Dave Handmaker, CEO of online printing company Next Day Flyers, says his business has benefited from online training in online marketing from Market Motive. The company offers courses in Internet marketing fundamentals, search engine optimization, analytics, and conversion. Self-paced courses start at $299 and courses with a personalized coach are $3,500 for 12 weeks.2. Allow for flexibility. With face-to-face training, you usually get one chance to soak it all in. But many online programs are on-demand, meaning learners can move at their own pace and watch presentations again and again if needed.”The added flexibility allows everyone to work at his or her own pace and better fit the training into a busy schedule,” Walsh says. “For instance, the technology training that we buy for our developers consists of a series of videos covering a topic. During the videos, the instructor works on a project and our developers follow along, recreating that same project. They’re constantly pausing, rewinding, or replaying the videos. The developers prefer this style of training, and it’s not possible offline.”For a monthly subscription fee of about $50, Treehouse offers unlimited access to more than 650 training videos, including quizzes and challenges, to keep employees updated on everything related to designing and developing programs for the web and mobile devices.3. Go mobile. Online education also allows for flexibility across technology formats. Employees can learn at home, on the job, or anywhere they use their smartphone.Related: How to Build and Manage a Website With Your iPhoneDuring the past year, mobile apps have become more popular, according to Kimmons. For instance, AppSumo offers hundreds of training apps and e-books selected specifically for entrepreneurs, on topics including design, analytics, marketing, advertising and productivity, ranging in price from $10 to about $500.4. Learn from top dogs. The Internet allows for opportunities to learn from those who are true experts in their chosen fields. For example, Walsh says online training allows his technology team to learn from programmers and software engineers who have experience working at Google, Facebook and other cutting-edge companies. For instance, Digital Royalty University (DRU) offers courses in utilizing social media for small business, created and taught by social media experts who have run social media campaigns for major brands like Shaquille O’Neal, the Chicago White Sox and DoubleTree by Hilton. DRU offers a free introductory class on shaping a social media strategy. Other classes on topics such as Facebook, Twitter, and creating an online brand, start at around $40.5. Do your research. Not every online course is worth the money. Chad Grills, co-founder of educational software company Applet Studios, learned that the hard way, when he purchased a large marketing training package and realized it contained very little actionable content.Related: How to Create an E-Mail Marketing Campaign That People Will NoticeTo avoid that disappointment, once you’ve decided which online training works for your company, research your choice. “If I think a training program is really valuable, and comes from a person who I respect, I’ll often contact them with questions to test their customer service, says Grills. “Then, I can make an informed decision. If you can’t get a hold of them or a support associate, that’s a red flag.”You can also try a Google or Twitter search for reviews of the learning program you’re considering, and look for courses that have courses that have some sort of follow up questions or quiz. A Smart Pair of Shoes With a Noble Purpose

first_img Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global The latest in wearable technology isn’t a watch or a ring, or anything even close to your hands. It’s for your feet. And these new smart shoes are designed with a far more altruistic goal in mind than checking your stock portfolio at a glance or making a phone call to grandma. The Lechal interactive haptic footwear use technology to help the visually impaired navigate from one place to another.Krispian Lawrence and Anirudh Sharma, friends and tinkerers with a love for experimenting and designing innovative products, founded India-based Ducere Technologies in 2011, with the idea that such products can be “intuitive, non-obtrusive, and easy on the pocket.” The Lechal shoe came about as a solution for the challenges faced by blind people, especially in the developing world.Visually challenged individuals must use a cane, which can be cumbersome and requires using at least one hand; an auditory navigation system, which can be difficult to hear in crowded situations; or a guide dog, which are often cost prohibitive and not allowed in many public places in developing countries. Putting the navigation system in his or her shoes allows the individual to keep both hands free and lets the person listen to what’s going on.”Lechal” means “let’s go” or “take me there” in Hindi. The system consists of a smartphone app connected via Bluetooth to either the Lechal shoes or to a set of polyurethane insoles that can be put inside existing shoes. The shoes or insoles contain a haptic actuator, similar to the sort of vibration pack that attaches to some game controllers. The user sets a destination in the app, which then uses GPS to determine the best route. As the user walks, the shoes indicate upcoming directions via direct tactile sensations: vibrating on the left side of the soles to indicate an upcoming left turn, for example. The shoes can also sense and communicate other information, such as obstacles in the way.Not simply a navigation device for the blind, however, the Lechal shoes also are designed to be useful for people who can see perfectly well. It can be used as a fitness tracking system — counting steps taken, calories burned, and monitoring and remembering workout routines. It can even tell you if you’re near a point of interest, with the smartphone app providing more information about that place. Here’s a look at the Lechal promotional video:The shoes and insoles are available for pre-order and priced around $100. The standard price serves to subsidize the cost for visually impaired or underprivileged individuals, who will be able to purchase the shoes for just under half that amount. A Look Back at Apple as it Celebrates its 40th Anniversary

first_img 7 min read Attend this free webinar and learn how you can maximize efficiency while getting the most critical things done right. This story originally appeared on Fortune Magazine Register Now » There were no fools sitting in that garage in California on April 1, 1976, when Apple was founded. That day, technology legends Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne co-founded Apple Computer, a company that would eventually go on to become one of the most iconic and valuable brands in the world. But who knew at the time?In the spring of 1976, these three young men were simply working on a computer and a dream that maybe they could become the next big thing in the budding technology industry. They had hope, a passion for technology, and wanted to build a true personal computer that could deliver to the average consumer something that was better than what they already knew.Wozniak was the inventor; Jobs the salesperson. In July 1976, Apple I, the company’s first computer, went on sale. It didn’t take long before things took off, and Apple I caught the attention of do-it-yourselfers. As sales started to rise, Apple Computer incorporated in 1977, officially growing from a hobby into a company. While Apple I was soaring and Apple Computer becoming a well-known name in Silicon Valley, Wozniak was hard at work on Apple II. Like the Apple I before it, the Apple II was successful. Before long, Apple had a slew of employees and revenue soaring well over $100 million by 1980. Apple had become the quintessential Silicon Valley success story. But as with any other company that grows so big so quickly, things started to change in Cupertino, Calif.Jobs was forced to deal with competing ideas, and a schism broke out internally as Apple Computer worked on building a graphical, user interface-based computer. There were two teams: Apple Lisa and Macintosh. After disagreements, Jobs left the Lisa team to head up the Macintosh effort. Like many other times over the years, he won. In 1984, the Macintosh, the spiritual predecessor to the Macs as we know them today, launched to the public.Although Macintosh launched to much fanfare and spawned the iconic “1984” commercial, trouble was afoot. Macintosh sales were not as strong as some had hoped and by 1985, Jobs was at odds with CEO John Sculley — a person he hired to manage the company he co-founded. Ultimately, the board chose Sculley over Jobs, and the Apple co-founder was gone. The ensuing years were troubling for Apple. Under Sculley’s leadership, Apple had difficulty finding its footing against increasing competition from other computer makers, notably Microsoft. Sculley and his team tried to fix the issues by launching more computers and expanding into new territories. Apple wanted to see if it could help its flagging business in the early 1990s by investing in speakers and cameras, and perhaps most interestingly, tried its luck with the now-infamous Apple Newton. As Apple’s shares continued to plummet and signs of a rebound waning by the moment, Sculley was ultimately replaced by Michael Spindler in 1993. His job was to turn Apple around and rediscover the secret sauce that had made the company successful nearly 20 years prior. Spindler’s efforts again fell short, prompting him to seek buyout offers from far more successful companies, including IBM and Sun Microsystems. Before he was ousted in 1996 and replaced by CEO Gil Amelio, Spindler and his board offered companies Apple on a silver platter for several billion dollars — a pittance compared to its current market value of $615 billion.Meanwhile, Jobs was hard at work at a new company he founded, dubbed NeXT. Having its own trouble finding a spot in a world dominated by Windows, NeXT was trying to make NeXTSTEP, its computer operating system pitched as a desirable alternative to Windows. Then Apple came calling back.In 1997, Apple acquired NeXT to get its hands on NeXTSTEP — and Jobs. It didn’t take long for Jobs to reassert himself at the company. Within months, Amelio was gone, leaving the board with no other choice but to give the chief executive job back to Jobs. The story from this point, of course, is legendary.Jobs quickly took the chainsaw to Apple’s business, eliminating ancillary projects and refocusing the company’s efforts on strong design and a desirable software experience. He also made several strategic acquisitions, allowing him to deliver built-in software, including video-editing tools, in Apple’s operating system, Mac OS X.It was in 2001, though, that Jobs and Apple started to soar. With its Mac business back to the basics and growing, Apple unveiled the iPod, a music player that would change the music industry forever. While the iPod had several competitors over the years, it was by far the most popular digital music player in the world. Indeed, it became a pop culture phenomenon, and it was rather common to see people scrolling the wheel on the device to hear their next track. Along the way, they had those white earbuds in their ears, showcasing to the world in now-iconic fashion that they were using an Apple product. As the iPod’s fame grew, the notoriously secretive Apple was looking to disrupt another market: smartphones. There were several companies already offering smart devices, such as Palm and BlackBerry. But Apple wanted to try something new. In 2007, Apple introduced the iPhone, a device that relied on a touchscreen — not physical keys and hardware components like competing devices — to control its proprietary software. It was another crowning achievement for Jobs and solidified his position as one of the most ground-breaking technology executives in the industry’s history. In 2010, armed with a slew of successful products, Apple announced the iPad, a tablet that would sell exceedingly well for several years. Apple, once again, had a hit on its hands. All the while, Apple’s shares and profits were soaring. The company was generating billions of dollars in profits each quarter, shareholders couldn’t get enough of its stock, and despite some health issues, Jobs appeared to be firmly in control.Everything, it seemed, was perfect. But over the last few years, Apple has faced its fair share of challenges. Google’s Android platform has become the world’s most popular mobile operating system. Several other device makers, including Samsung, have been delivering compelling alternatives to the iPhone. Meanwhile, the tablet market has cooled off, and Apple’s iPad business has been in free fall.In addition, the once-secretive company hasn’t plugged its leaks so well, and now, it’s not uncommon for many of Apple’s biggest announcements to be leaked before its press shows even kick off.Tragedy has also struck Apple. Following a years-long battle with cancer, Jobs died in 2012, leaving a massive void in Cupertino. Jobs handpicked his chief operating officer, Tim Cook, to take over Apple and lead the company into the future. The Cook era has been relatively stable. Despite the aforementioned concerns with Apple’s tablet business, the company is still generating record sales and boosting its cash coffers. Indeed, Apple is one of the richest companies in the world, and there are no signs of it slowing down.Looking ahead, like Jobs, Cook seems ready to see beyond Apple’s standard products. He’s already ventured into streaming with Apple Music and is reportedly working on entering new categories, including paid TV services. Most notably, Cook has reportedly assembled a secret team with one goal: to develop an Apple car.But that’s the future.April 1 is Apple’s day to look back on the successes, the failures, the rebounds, the retreats. It’s also an opportunity to celebrate what the company has become, and what it has done with technology to dramatically change our lives. Not everyone is an Apple fan, and there are many legitimate reasons for that. But looking at what Apple has accomplished in 40 years, at least on April Fool’s Day, it would be foolish not to tip one’s hat for all it’s done. 4 Things Data is Not and Where to Focus Instead

first_img Register Now » 5 min read Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Imagine this scenario. Jane blinks and a smart car pulls up, knowing it’s time for her doctor’s appointment. No, the smart car isn’t connected to Jane’s eyes, but through refined data, a company like Google or Uber can know when your next medical checkup is due, help you book an appointment with the doctor and send a smart car to pick you up.This is the age of data, where the relationship between consumers, advertising agencies and service providers can be strengthened. While we’re still far from an utopian world — where companies have acquired enough intelligence to monetize and use data mined from our lives to allow their machines to interact on an interpersonal level with humans — it’s not too out of reach.Related: The Big Deal About Big Data For Small BusinessesAccording to research, each person will generate around 1.7 megabytes of new data every second by 2020. There’s value in big data, and everybody wants a piece of the pie. But big data is just part of a huge process. Here’s what data is not and how companies should aim to recoup their investment in big data.1. Data is not cash.Unlike ad clicks that instantly turns a publisher’s or distributor’s efforts into cold cash, data is not cash. While companies are hungry for more data, there’s already an abundance of data. Data generated is said to reach 44 trillion gigabytes annually by 2020. Extracting the investments venture capitialists have poured into startups in the name of big data is where the job lies. When your company finds itself at an intersection between providing value and impressing investors, data can make the job of your CEO a lot easier. However, your big data must go through the process where the chief data officer directly gives the CEO recommendations on how best to provide real value while generating revenue from multiple touchpoints made possible by big data. When there’s an abundance of data, getting value from it lies in the job that real humans still have to do.2. Data is an unprocessed raw material, not a finished product.Data is not useful unless translated and its value uncovered. The biggest issue with big data is management. Data management under this umbrella involves the following:Storage — As the volume of data a company acquires becomes bigger, it must address the issue of storage. How to keep data safe and protected will be of concern.Validating — Your data still needs to be validated. Processing — The job of the data management team will be to process and make sense of big data.Big data will need a focused team that is dedicated to processing data generated from IOTs, consumer behaviors and analytics. But the role of this team will be no mean feat as the team needs to make sense of the huge volume of data that will bombard them in real time. Hence, the question will shift from how big is the data being processed to how fast is the data being processed.Related: ‘Big Data’ Is No Longer Enough: It’s Now All About ‘Fast Data’3. Data is not a quick fix to underperforming marketing. You will often hear CEOs and CMOs declare big data as part of their strategy. They believe once the company is able to generate enough data through IOT and consumer behavior, investors will begin to smile again. This is a big promise albeit without any real execution plan to follow through.I hate to break it to you, but data in itself will not solve your performance problems. What will turn an underperforming business around is its approach to addressing key concerns through marketing initiatives supported by data. This means businesses should not be afraid to take the leap into new market segments. It’s a no-brainer. Think mobile and augmented reality.4. Data is not perfect. From instances where data presents false positives to incorrect findings, data is anything but perfect. Starting from the tools that transmit data to the models on which the analysis is based, it’s all prone to error. This is not a result of bad design, per se. Much of the blame lies on the fact that processing big data is a complex job.Related: Why Entrepreneurs Should Look Beyond Big DataIn a world where context is everything, validating big data is the most important aspect of data management. The best way to get good results from data analysis is to question every piece of information over and over again. By involving human elements in the data analysis and validation process, you can guarantee that future predictions based on big data are leading to real insights.  Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals Attend this free webinar and learn how you can maximize efficiency while getting the most critical things done right.
